Protecting Your Children from Pedophiles
One of the biggest fears in parenting is the fear that when our guard is down that a pedophile might prey upon the little ones in our charge. This article is about keeping them safe.
We’ve all seen the Dateline episodes on which amazingly normal looking men are caught red-handed in their attempt to fulfill their fantasies of sex with underage girls and boys. Over and over again, when watching, we are struck with two words that continue to crop up: “That’s sick!†There is no doubt that pedophilia is a sickness, one that mainly afflicts men, and one that has resulted in the victimization of billions of people worldwide. That’s “billion†with a “bâ€. Sadly, it’s not only a sickness, but also a sickness that society currently demands we keep silent.
Recently the public stirred into frenzy over a man who openly declared his attraction to young girls. The reality of the matter is that his public declaration of his proclivity will likely keep him from ever offending. In short, because his temptations are known, he is under strict surveillance. That surveillance should serve to protect the would-be victims of his proclivities, but also will serve to protect him from himself. It’s very rare that a pedophile will commit their crime without remorse. In fact, the most common statement upon being caught for their crimes is “Thank God. Please help me.†A better society would be one where we took compassion on would-be pedophiles by giving them an open, non-judgmental society in which they could protect themselves and our children from their proclivities and allowed them to openly state their attractions, giving us ample opportunity to protect them and our children from the sickness that is pedophilia. We would never leave little Sarah with Uncle John if we knew in advance that he was attracted to underage girls. As nice as that simple forewarning would be, we don’t live in that society. We live in this one, and in this one we must make choices to protect our children from an illness whose secrecy we ourselves are guilty of protecting.
